12/3/2009I hope I speak for more than just myself. I don't understand why the Supreme Court's CLE commission won't permit all of our CLE hours to be taken online, whether by prerecorded lesson or by live webcast. I sent a question to them awhile back, and the response I got was that they'd considered it a couple of years ago, and had increased the number of hours, and there really wasn't a need to revisit it.
The world is changing. In fact, it's already changed. More and more education is being accomplished online. The legal profession should be willing to adapt.
Not only that, but for those of us who live in remote locations (Athens for me), driving to CLE in Columbus involves not just time lost on the road, but for those who are concerned about our "carbon footprint," it involves the use of gasoline and emissions into the atmosphere.
If the concern is that lawyers will not pay attention and will cheat if they are able to take all their CLE online, then I have a couple of responses. The first is that even at in-person CLE I've seen a few colleagues working on files and reading newspapers rather than paying attention to what's being taught. The other is that the assumption that most or even many lawyers will cheat feeds into the public perception of our profession that I thought the Supreme Court was trying to combat - that we're cheats and swindlers. If we're telling the public that lawyers are honest and professional, then can't we give ourselves the benefit of the doubt that we are indeed honest and professional, and invest trust in the members of the profession that we'll pay attention if we're taking CLE online?
I know the OSBA has many more important matters to tackle than this, but I hope soon you might try to persuade the Supreme Court's CLE Commission to trust us and allow us to join the rest of the world that's taking full advantage of online educational capabilities. Allow us to take all CLE online, please.
8/27/2009We're putting together next year's schedule. What programs do you want to see-practice areas to cover, specific topics, etc.? Are there any programs that we should not bother with? Now's the time to let us know. 7/20/2009You and your law firm are judged by every piece of writing that goes out the door. Make sure it's of the highest quality by attending Superior Legal Writing and Editing next week in Columbus, Cleveland, or Perrysburg. The speaker is Dan White, the author of numerous books and articles on the law, professional editor and internationally acclaimed public speaker. He comes to us highly recommended, so take 3 hours out of your day to improve your writing skills. 6/17/2009Thanks for visiting the new CLE blog. We view this as an opportunity to exchange ideas and thoughts regarding continuing legal education in Ohio. From us, you will see notices of upcoming seminars, webcasts, simulcasts (which were formerly delivered via satellite), publications, etc. From you, we hope to hear what you liked or disliked about a particular program, ideas for future programs or speakers that you would like to hear, and more. Feel free to visit often. 6/15/2009
What is a blog?
A blog is a site designed to help you share information. Blogs can be used as news sites, journals, diaries, team sites, and more. It is your place on the World Wide Web.
Blogs are typically displayed in reverse chronological order (newest entries first), and consist of frequent short postings. With this blog, it is also possible for site visitors to comment on your postings.
Before you get started, please take a moment to read the following user guides, which give you an overview of how other OSBA blogs look and function:
