- I-1. Q: What does the Casemaker Web Library do?
[TOP]
- A: Casemaker Web Library allows you to search and browse a variety of legal information, such as the ORC and case law, through the Internet.
- I-2. Q: Is the Casemaker Web Library free? [TOP]
- A: Use of the Casemaker Web Library is free to all OSBA members.
- I-3. Q: How do I get around the fact that the ORC is not annotated? [TOP]
- A: With the full text searching capability of the Casemaker Web Library, you no longer have to rely on annotations to find out which cases are cited. When you plug a statute into the basic search screen and hit search, you will retrieve the full text of all cases that discuss the code in question. Then you can make your own decision of relevance without relying on the summary of someone who might not even be a law student or lawyer.
- I-4. Q: Can you use the Casemaker Web Library as a citator? [TOP]
- A: By entering the case or statute, all the cases where either was mentioned will be pulled up. You should first check in the Supreme Court Library to see if it is mentioned and modified in any way. If it has been you do not need to look further because the decision is binding in all lower courts. Regardless, you can read the decision yourself to find out if it would be pertinent to your case.
- I-5. Q: What is the minimum number of characters that can be entered as a search term? [TOP]
- A: You must enter at least 2 characters for every search term. The search engine will return an error if you enter one character by itself.
- I-6. Q: How does the search engine decide the rank of a document? [TOP]
- A: The ranking algorithm takes into consideration relative word ordering, word proximity, database frequency, document frequency and position in text.
- I-7. Q: How can I narrow my search? It is returning too many results. [TOP]
- A: If you are getting too many search results, try the following:
1. Add more words to your query.
2. Use the inclusion operator (+) to ensure wanted terms are in the documents returned.
3. Use the exclusion operator (-) to ensure documents retuned do not include unwanted terms.
4. If you are searching for a phrase enter it as such (i.e. "bill of sale").
5. Change the Word Forms control to Exact.
6. Decrease the range of the proximity control.
- I-8. Q: I'm having trouble getting results from my searches. [TOP]
- A: 1. Reduce the number of words in your query.
2. Check your spelling.
3. Increase the scope of the proximity control.
4. Are you searching the correct book?
- I-9. Q: I'm having trouble using the asterisk (*) in my searches now. It used to work. [TOP]
- A: We modifed to search engine to increase the accuracy of phrase searches. This, however, seems to have caused problems when using the asterisk in your search expression. We are currently working on a solution to get the asterisk working again.
- I-10. Q: Why does the license agreement come up when I hit "search," and what do I have to do since I previously agreed? [TOP]
- A: The license agreement will pop up once a month. You will have to agree to all the conditions again to continue accessing the Casemaker Web Library.
- I-11. Q: Why does the URL change when I click the Enter Casemaker button? [TOP]
- A: The Casemaker online system is housed on Lawriter servers.
- I-12. Q: Is a demo account available for non-members to try Casemaker? [TOP]

- I-13. Q: I am having problems logging onto the system. [TOP]
- A: There are quite a few things you need to check:
- Your member status. If your dues are delinquent you cannot access the Members section of the website, nor the Casemaker System. Contact Member Services.
- Your password. You are using the correct

- Contact Member Services.
- Your computer and web browser requirements:
- Check your web browser version - old web browsers are buggy. We recommend using Mozilla or MS Internet Explorer 6.x. Other web browers, and versions, may be used, however that is not what we recommend. Please refer to your web browser's Help System/Information for upgrading instructions.
- Check your web browser configuration - your browser must be set to accept cookies. If your browser is configured to deny cookies, or deny cookies from our sites, you will be unable to use the system. Please refer to your web browser's Help System/Information for instructions. For those concerned about cookie security, the domains we use are .ohiobar.org and .lawriter.net.
- AOL USERS - you need to use the lastest AOL Client, version 9.x. Please goto http://www.aol.com/ to obtain the free upgrade.
- Check your hard drive space. You should have enough for your web browser to store it's cache information. Check your Operating System's HELP system or your manual for more information.
- Check your hard drive's file system for errors. Most pre-win2k Microsoft systems will encounter problems after a crash if scandisk is not run to verify drive integrity.
- If you have IT support at your location/organization, contact them about the above suggestions. If you do not have direct IT support, contact the vendor that you purchased the computer from - most provide direct support (and it may have been included in your purchase price).

- A: Please see Login Problems. Also, be sure to read the HELP INFORMATION.

- I-18. Q: I need to contact the OSBA. [TOP]
- A: See Contact Information
- I-19. Q: I typed a name in the membership directory and I received "sorry try again." [TOP]

Therefore, in the above case, you may be misspelling the name. Try typing a portion of the name. Or just the last name. Or the first name, and if you know the city, type that in. Also, please be sure to read the Membership Directory Search Help Section
- I-20. Q: I have recently changed firms.
Casemaker is not recognizing my member number and is not allowing me to login to Casemaker. [TOP]- A: To use Casemaker, you must be logged on the OSBA Web site, not Casemaker. For information regarding logging onto the OSBA Web site, see Login issues.

is a seperate service from your membership data. You subscribe to receive it,
and unsubscribe from it. You choose the address with which to receive it. The address you receive the
Online Report is unrelated to the e-mail address you provide with your membership to the OSBA.
This setup is purposeful, so that you have the opportunity, if you so choose, to receive
the Online Report to an alternate email address (ie an example is work versus home).
Signup information is available at the OSBA Report Online area of the website. Unsubscription information is included in each issue that is mailed to you each week.

- A: To use Casemaker, you must be logged into the OSBA Website because this is a members-only

with the old site, and this is, and always will be, required to use Casemaker.
You can choose to set automatic-login when you login. Please see the HELP section where automatic login is further explained.
- I-26. Q: I put in under the reported cases "wiretapping", "wiretap","Wire communiction", "wire communication intercept" and the statute. Nothing came back, but I know a case exists. [TOP]

- You have read the HELP information within Casemaker. Specifically, the information on how the search engine works, the tips, and the examples.
