2012 Leadership Academy graduates' comments

The Leadership Academy was an eye-opener in terms of showing leadership opportunities within the OSBA and the greater legal community—whether through sections or committees or other positions, it seems like there’s an opportunity for every level of interest.
...

I am now more informed about leadership opportunities which comes in many forms and through different organizations including the OSBA Committees, Civil Legal Services to the Poor, Bankruptcy, Pro Bono Clinic, Ohio Lawyers Assistance Program, [and] the judiciary.  I previously had limited knowledge regarding the impact attorneys can have in serving as leaders in these various organizations.
...

It was good to speak with people from around the state to see what they are involved in and to potentially use that as inspiration for getting involved in activities in my area. It also gave me a better idea of opportunities within the OSBA.
...

I now have a better understanding of the importance of ethical and professional considerations in pursuing leadership roles. This involves integrity and the achievement of competence in the profession. This includes a commitment to service within the profession and community. I am committed and aspire to continue to strive for the highest standards of integrity within the profession which is critical in the pursuit of leadership roles.

The sessions helped me recognize that being a leader is a big responsibility that should be taken seriously and that performing a leadership role well can lead to personal growth and may be even social or legislative change.
...

I now fully appreciate the extent of our underfunded justice system, the adverse impact of an underfunded justice system on those who need representation and/or access to the courts, and how I can volunteer for leadership opportunities within various organizations such as the Civil Legal Services to the Poor, Bankruptcy, Pro Bono Clinic, [and] Ohio Lawyers Assistance Program.
...

I have not had an opportunity to meet so many leaders in our profession before this. For instance the current, past and future presidents of the OSBA, the Supreme Court Chief Justice, and members of different law practices around the state.
...

One of the best ways to learn leadership is to interact with and learn from our current leaders. I truly appreciated the many, many opportunities we had to work with so many leaders across our state. I really want to thank everyone for the time they spent talking with us and teaching us.
...

I feel that I have strong contacts now throughout the State of Ohio. I like that I have friends and colleagues who I can call upon for help and opportunities within the legal field. I know people throughout the State who I may never have met but for the OSBA Leadership Academy.
...

I would have never had the opportunity to meet the wide variety of accomplished individuals that I have met if it was not for this program. I am truly grateful.
...

I have built relationships with attorneys across the State of Ohio through the Leadership Academy. I will maintain these relationships, especially with the attorneys in Columbus. I encourage the Leadership Academy to facilitate ways in which the 2012 Leadership Academy Class can maintain and continue to build on these relationships moving forward.

I was able to meet such a wide variety of attorneys and leaders, and I got some really great information that has allowed me to create a much more detailed and proactive plan to build my own leadership role. What was great is that the experience was not just educational, it was a lot of fun at the same time.
...

I was looking for inspiration to become a better leader and to become more informed how to achieve this. The Leadership Academy satisfied these expectations.
...

The Leadership Academy exceeded all of my expectations. Thank you so much.
...

It exposed me to many new things, inspired me to get involved and gave me the tools to do itwhich was exactly what I was seeking. In addition, it provided opportunities to speak in a group setting, which is always helpful.
...

I would say that it exceeded my expectations. It was far more laid back than I expected, which allowed me and other class members to get to know each other very well.
...

Honestly, coming in, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But, it was a very rewarding experience and I would encourage others to apply.
...

It has been a great experience and has given me some ideas on how to develop my leadership skills and engage in leadership opportunities.
...

This was an invaluable experience.
