Experienced litigators and those who have never been in a courtroom will all benefit from this presentation on what really happens in Ohio courtrooms with jury trials, including average verdicts and big verdicts; the art and science of the jury selection process; the law and strategies employed with expert witnesses; the thought process involved in presenting a compelling closing argument; why it often makes sense not to make objections during trials but how to do so effectively when appropriate; and professionalism in the courtroom, with illustrations from Hollywood depictions of trial scenes.

Probate/Estate Planning

This presentation will cover a wide range of probate and trust administration and litigation topics and include a probate and trust law legislation update. It will also address the technical and practical aspects of special needs trusts for disabled persons and their families, wrongful death settlements and notice requirements. If time permits it will also cover the basics of the federal estate tax.

Appellate Practice; Ethics, Professionalism & Substance Abuse

4 CLE hours (1.5 General, 1.0 Ethics, 1.0 Professionalism, & .5 Substance Abuse)

This presentation will cover the following topics: Ethics - standards in malpractice and discipline and recent cases.  Professionalism - relation to professional standards and misconduct, as well as public perceptions, and misery in the profession.  Substance abuse - alcohol, drugs and mental illness--causes, diagnosis, treatment and Ohio cases. Appellate practice - briefing, oral argument and procedures.
