Columbus, Ohio (May 2, 2014) – Cincinnati attorney John D. Holschuh Jr. today was elected to become the Ohio State Bar Association’s (OSBA) president-elect at the OSBA’s Annual Convention in Columbus. Holschuh will take office as OSBA president on July 1, 2015.
When he assumes his presidency, Holschuh has three goals:
1. Young lawyers—to get them more involved in the OSBA and to help them in the profession of practicing law;
2. Legal Aid—to restore Legal Aid funding by developing and creating ideas that will enable Legal Aid to provide services that are desperately needed; and
3. Advocate for the legal profession—to continue to work with the Supreme Court of Ohio Court, the Ohio Legislature and the governor to advocate for our profession.
Holschuh’s interest in the law was sparked by his father, a lawyer and judge whose passion for the law and for doing “the right thing at all costs” continues to be a “tremendous influence.” A current member of the OSBA Board of Governors, Holschuh would like to improve the ease of access to all of the OSBA’s considerable resources through technology. He noted, “If every lawyer in Ohio realized what they can access from their office by being an OSBA member, the OSBA would be indispensable.” In addition, he looks forward to helping the OSBA establish regional programs to help new lawyers form professional relationships and better understand the practice of law.
In addition to his active OSBA membership, he is a past president of the Cincinnati Bar Association and the Cincinnati Bar Foundation. He is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, an Advocate of the American Board of Trial Advocates, and Fellow of the International Society of Barristers.
A partner in the Cincinnati firm, Santen & Hughes, LPA, Holschuh represents patients and their families in medical negligence and personal injury litigation. A member of the Order of Barristers, he has been cited with a Merit Award by the Ohio Legal Center Institute. He has also authored numerous articles and lectured on civil litigation. He has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America in the area of personal injury litigation for the past 15 years, and was recognized in Best Lawyers 2014 as a “Lawyer of the Year.” He has also been recognized as one of the “top 100” Ohio Super Lawyers, and as one of the “top 50” Cincinnati Super Lawyers. In addition, Cincinnati Magazine recognized him as one of “The Best of the Best” Leading Lawyers in 2011 in the area of malpractice. Holschuh, who has practiced in the area of medical negligence for more than 33 years, has tried cases throughout Ohio and Kentucky.
Holschuh earned his bachelor’s degree from Miami University at Oxford in 1977 and his law degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 1980.
The Ohio State Bar Association, founded in 1880, is a voluntary association representing approximately 25,000 members of the bench and bar of Ohio as well as nearly 4,000 legal assistants and law students. Through its activities and the activities of its related organizations, the OSBA serves both its members and the public by promoting the highest standards in the practice of law and the administration of justice.
