OSBA paralegal definition
A paralegal is a person, qualified by education, training or work experience who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity and who performs substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible.

OSBA paralegal certification program
The OSBA has established a credentialing program for paralegals. Individuals meeting the eligibility requirements and passing a written examination will be designated as an “OSBA Certified Paralegal.” Click here for information on the OSBA Paralegal Certification Program. As a benefit of membership, paralegals can attend live OSBA continuing legal education (CLE) courses per year free of charge (not valid for OSBA annual convention).  This access to the substantial legal curriculum offered by OSBA CLE provides associate members and the attorneys for whom they work a greater ability to serve their clients.

Committees and sections
All paralegal members are automatically added to the roster of the OSBA Paralegals Committee.  In addition, the OSBA has more than 50 other committees and sections that associate members are encouraged to join. A complete listing of sections and committees is available on the membership application. Sections require an additional payment of only $3 each for paralegal members. Committee membership is free.

All OSBA members have free access to one of the best legal research sites on the Internet, Casemaker.

OSBA staff develops relationships with vendors who offer our members discounts on products and services that will benefit them and their practices. Vendor services include payroll services, marketing assistance, retirement planning, car rental, computers, office supplies, overnight shipping and a workers' compensation group rating program.

All members receive the Paralegal News newsletter.  Published three times per year, it contains information pertinent to your job responsibilities, as well as other news about your profession and the OSBA. Associate members also receive the Ohio Lawyer magazine as well as the OSBA Report Online daily via email.

The OSBA membership cycle runs Jan. 1 through Dec. 31. Dues are prorated quarterly until Oct. 1. After Oct. 1, dues are charged at the full rate, which includes both the remainder of the current year and the following year. Full dues are $85.00 per year. As a paralegal member, you will also have the option to receive your own subscription to the Ohio State Bar Association Report for an additional $50 per year (regular price $150). If you would like a subscription to the Report, mark the appropriate box on the application.
