Akron attorney announces candidacy for 2015 OSBA president-elect

Ronald S. KoppRonald S. Kopp announced his candidacy for president-elect of the Ohio State Bar Association. The election will take place at the Association’s Annual Convention in Sandusky April 29 to May 1, 2015.

Ronald S. Kopp is a 35-year practitioner who has spent his entire career in Akron and Cleveland with Roetzel & Andress. Roetzel also has offices in Columbus, Cincinnati, and Toledo, as well as six offices outside Ohio. Early in his career, Kopp’s practice consisted of general litigation, including product liability. For the past 20 years, though, he has focused almost exclusively on business and intellectual property litigation. He has served in various management positions with his firm, including having chaired the Business Litigation and Business Services practice groups, as well as heading the Akron office. Presently, he is the firm’s administrative partner.

Kopp currently serves on the OSBA Board of Governors. In the past, he has served on the Council of Delegates and has been a member of the OSBA Litigation Section and Media Law Committee. A past president of the Akron Bar Association, he has served two terms on that association’s board of trustees. He currently is serving as an ex-officio member on that board. He is a founding Fellow and a past governor of the Akron Bar Association Foundation. He also is a member of the American and Federal bar associations.

He currently is board chair of Leadership Akron, which focuses on community leadership throughout the greater Summit County area. He also serves on the boards of the John S. Knight Memorial Journalism Fund and the Welty Family Foundation. He is a past trustee on the boards of United Disability Services, the Akron General Medical Center Foundation, and the Summit County Historical Society. He is a past president of Fairlawn Country Club.

Kopp was selected as one of the “Top Ten Ohio Lawyers” by Ohio Super Lawyers magazine in 2010, and he has been selected as one of the “Top 100 Ohio Lawyers” and “Top 50 Cleveland Lawyers” by that publication every year since 2007. In 2014, he was named to “America’s Most Honored Professionals (Top 1%)” by the American Registry. He is rated AV Pre-eminent by Martindale Hubbell Law Directory. He has consistently been named to the Best Lawyers in America® for Bet the Company Litigation, Commercial Litigation, First Amendment Litigation and Intellectual Property Litigation.

Ron and Jean, his wife of 32 years, have three grown children, Meghan, Molly and Andrew, two great sons-in-law, Ben and Trent, and one absolutely terrific grandson, Liam.

“The profession has been altered dramatically by the advent of technology, as well as by changing demographics and economics,” Kopp said recently. “The OSBA isn’t just a nicety; it is an absolute necessity if we are to stand guard over our justice system and advance the profession. If we don’t act together as a profession, others with different agendas will act for us. I doubt we’ll like the result. If elected, I intend to continue the great work started by others, to make sure we continuously improve, and to assure we advance our leadership as the top state bar association in the country.”
