CNO Review Veterans Day cover story features OSBA members

Veteran saluting the American flag.In honor of Veterans Day, three representative members of the U.S. Armed Forces who also happen to be lawyers and judges shared their stories for the November edition of the CNO Review.

In its most recent statistical analysis, the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs estimated Ohio’s veteran population to be about 900,000 people, which is the sixth largest in the nation. With more than 60,000 attorneys registered in Ohio, according to the records maintained by the Ohio Supreme Court’s Office of Attorney Services, there are thousands of active, inactive, corporate and retired attorneys with a military background.

The three veterans interviewed included:

  • Ohio State Bar Association member Summer Moses, an attorney in the Executive Agencies section of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, who discusses her decision to enlist in the Army National Guard following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and what she learned in the military;
  • OSBA Military and Veterans Affairs Committee Chair Col. Duncan D. Aukland, chief legal counsel for the Ohio Adjutant General’s Department, who explains how he chose the law as his vocation and what led him to join the military, or the “family business” as he calls it; and
  • Ohio Supreme Court Justice William M. O’Neill, who describes his unique assignment in the U.S. Army during Vietnam and the array of jobs he held before his election to the Supreme Court in November last year.
