Dayton lawyer takes mentor’s advice to heart

Tony AlexanderWhen Tony Alexander was a young lawyer, a mentor gave him advice that he has tried to follow for the past 13 years.

“When I started my law practice in 2000, one of the elder statesmen in the firm gave me good advice about community involvement,” Alexander said. “He told me to get involved in causes that I believe in and not to simply take up a seat.”

The Dayton resident has taken that advice to heart by supporting causes he believes in, including the American Cancer Society. Alexander serves on the executive committee for the Dayton Golf Classic that this year raised about $175,000 for cancer research.

“Cancer is a disease that does not discriminate and it is the rare person who has not been touched in some way by this disease,” Alexander said. “During my first semester in law school, my father died of lung cancer that had spread to his brain. This past winter, my mother was diagnosed with liver cancer.”

Alexander recently completed two years as board chairman for The Foodbank, Inc., a nonprofit organization that distributes food to agencies in Montgomery, Greene and Preble counties. He is also the secretary for the Wright State University Alumni Board, and has served as president of the Holy Angels Parish Council. A member of the Ohio State Bar Association, Alexander was recently inducted as an Ohio State Bar Foundation Fellow. He also serves as a mentor for the Supreme Court of Ohio Lawyer to Lawyer Mentoring Program.

Alexander is an attorney with Burton Law LLC, where he focuses his practice on business law and primarily serves as outside general counsel to a variety of companies. In one of his most memorable cases, Alexander was able to help a third-generation family-owned business turn its fortune around during the economic downturn so that the business has regained some of the ground it lost and is now creating new jobs.

“I enjoy helping people,” Alexander said. “I like to be able to apply my education, experience and knowledge to assist business owners to make their businesses successful.”

In his free time, Alexander enjoys hiking and camping with his wife, Kathy. Their son, Bradley, graduated from Fairmont High School and this fall will be attending The Ohio State University.
