OSBA member turns cancer diagnosis into volunteer passion

John DunnAttorney John Dunn’s life changed eight years ago when he was diagnosed with sarcoma in his right thigh and he discovered what the American Cancer Society does for cancer patients. Because of that, he became a strong advocate for the organization.

When Dunn was first diagnosed with cancer, the American Cancer Society was a source for educational information. “The website helped me to better understand my diagnosis and how I would proceed with treatment,” Dunn said. “Throughout my treatment, my family and I witnessed the impact the American Cancer Society’s support mechanisms at hospitals and cancer treatment centers had on cancer patients.”

Dunn underwent treatment in October 2004 and has been cancer free ever since. He has been heavily involved with the American Cancer Society since then, serving five years on the Hamilton County Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society as the government relations chair, doing pro bono work for the organization and participating on the Cattle Barons Ball Inaugural Committee. Dunn was recently honored at the Kentucky Baron’s Ball gala for his support and dedication to the organization.

Dunn pursued a career in law because his family has always put a focus on community service and he believed becoming an attorney was a way to give back to his community. Dunn received his undergraduate degree from Xavier University where he majored in criminal justice. He went on to receive his law degree at Northern Kentucky’s Chase College of Law, where he is now an adjunct instructor. “I wanted to give back to my alma mater and help the students learn how the theory and practice of law meet.” Dunn also serves as a U.S. Army Reservist, and says that if he weren’t a lawyer he would be a full-time soldier.

Dunn has been a member of the Ohio State Bar Association since 2002. He is an attorney in the Reminger Co., L.P.A. Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky office, where his practice focuses on civil defense, professional liability, insurance coverage and general liability. He says of his practice, “I enjoy the opportunity to get involved with new types of businesses and companies and to learn about both their needs—in terms of legal representation—and how their businesses operate.”
