Sylvania Southview wins OCLRE Mock Trial state championship

Ohio High School Mock Trial Champions
The Ohio Center for Law-Related Education (the Center) concluded its 31st annual High School Mock Trial Competition on Saturday, March 8, when Sylvania Southview High School (Lucas County) defeated Orange High School (Cuyahoga County) to win the state championship. The competition began on Thursday, March 6, at the Franklin County Courthouse with 30 teams from across the state.

Sylvania Southview and Orange each won four consecutive trials to advance to the championship, which took place at the Ohio Statehouse and was broadcast live by the Ohio Channel. The Sylvania Southview team will compete for the National High School Mock Trial Championship, May 8-10, in Madison, Wisconsin.

The Ohio Mock Trial season began on Jan. 31 with 330 teams. Of these teams, 100 advanced to eleven regional competitions on Feb. 21. Approximately 3,500 students participated in addition to more than 1,000 legal professionals who served as volunteer judges, tournament coordinators and team advisors. Mock Trial is Ohio’s largest high school academic competition and among the largest High School Mock Trial programs in the nation.

The panel of judges for the final trial consisted of Ohio State Bar Association President Jonathan Hollingsworth, Esq., Ohio State Bar Foundation President Steve Tilson, Esq., Mock Trial Competition Committee Member and Clermont County Common Pleas Judge Jerry McBride and Marion County Common Pleas Court Judge Deborah Alspach.

Each year, the Center develops an original mock trial case written by a committee of volunteer attorneys. This year’s case analyzed student rights under the First and Fourth Amendments.

The Center partners with teachers to engage students in actively learning about government, citizenship and the law. The Center is sponsored by the Supreme Court of Ohio, Ohio State Bar Association, Ohio Attorney General’s Office and the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio Foundation. Mock Trial is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Ohio State Bar Foundation.
