Two OSBA-sponsored House Bills recommended for passage

May 30, 2013, Update: On May 29, H.B. 138 was unanimously passed by the Ohio House of Representatives. The legislation will now be considered by the Ohio Senate.

Proposed changes to streamline the tax appeals process (H.B. 138), and updates to Ohio’s laws governing health care powers of attorney (H.B. 126) were both unanimously recommended for passage by the Ohio House Ways and Means Committee and the Ohio House Judiciary Committee, respectively, on May 22, 2013.

Sponsored by Rep. Jeff McClain and Rep. Tom Letson, H.B. 138 originated in the Ohio State Bar Association Taxation Law Committee and was headed by Committee Chair Nicholas M.J. Ray. No date has been set for full consideration by the full Ohio House of Representatives, but we anticipate that it will be soon. Read a complete overview of H.B. 138, or read Ray's proponent testimony.

Sponsored by Rep. Stephanie Kunze and Rep. Michael Stinziano, H.B. 126 originated in the OSBA Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law Section and was headed by OSBA member Alan S. Acker. Read Acker's testimony, which summarizes the bill in greater detail. The legislation will be considered by the full Ohio House of Representatives at a later date.
