Technology is changing the way lawyers do business. A 2012 technology use survey by the American Bar Association found that 89 percent of attorneys are using smartphones for law-related work outside the office. In addition, 33 percent reported using tablets—a considerable jump from just 15 percent in 2011.
To keep pace with the changing technology needs of its members, the OSBA provides all course materials for CLE seminars exclusively through an eBook library. The move will eliminate the need for hardcopy course books that last year totaled more than four million sheets of paper.
“While going to an electronic library will certainly hold down our costs and reduce our impact on the environment, this is really about providing the innovative tools lawyers need to be competitive in today’s business climate,” OSBA President Judge Patrick Fischer said.
OSBA members who have registered for at least one live CLE seminar will have 24/7 access to the more than 220 books in the OSBA CLE eBook Library that is fully searchable by practice area and contents. Additionally, the OSBA is providing a paperless version of the OSBA Report, a print publication of Ohio case summaries and legal news. The OSBA Report online is a customizable daily or a weekly email that is also available as a mobile app for iPhone and Android devices.
“As the practice of law becomes increasingly mobile, we will continue to look for ways to stay ahead of the technology curve,” President Fischer added.
